Venice Trip

Updated: Mar 13, 2025

Venice, Italy—what can I say? If you ever get the chance to visit, take it without hesitation. Stepping into this city feels like stepping back in time. The only hint that I wasn’t living in the Medieval era were the throngs of tourists. This captivating place is made up of 118 small islands, separated by canals and connected by over 400 bridges, all nestled within the Venetian Lagoon. Around 55,000 people call this historic city home.

My husband and I traveled to Venice to celebrate both my birthday and our anniversary, and it exceeded all our expectations. We stayed at the Royal Palace Hotel, located near the iconic San Marco Piazza. The staff were warm and accommodating, the rooms cleaned daily, and the breakfasts traditionally continental. My only critique: skip the rubbery, microwaved omelettes they’re not worth it. Dining in the square itself is notoriously expensive, and thankfully we’d been warned in advance. Instead, we opted for charming smaller restaurants that lined the canals or were tucked into hidden squares throughout the island. These offered much more affordable yet delightful meals.

The narrow passageways of Venice weave like a labyrinth, and getting lost is almost inevitable though it’s all part of the charm. We found ourselves wandering through these winding paths, circling back on occasion, but always discovering something new and enchanting around each corner.

We crossed the same bridge three times before finally finding our way. One piece of advice for the ladies: wear flat shoes! Navigating those uneven flagstones in heels is not only uncomfortable but downright risky.

The young tourists provided endless entertainment. Everywhere we went, people were snapping selfies or striking that classic “leg in front” pose to appear slimmer. My wrinkly hubby and I couldn’t resist joining the fun. We photobombed countless pictures, imagining the tourists later asking, “Who on earth are those old people in the background?” It still makes me laugh just thinking about it.

Without cars on the islands, the air felt fresh and clean free from fumes or pollution. It was such a refreshing change. I have to say, Venice turned out to be one of the best trips we’ve ever taken. We laughed non-stop, and the sheer joy of the experience is something I’ll never forget. We enjoyed it so much that we’re already counting down the days until we can go back.
